Author Interview: Julie Anne Peters

Julie Anne Peters

National Book Award finalist Julie Anne Peters is the author of Rage: A Love Story which comes out on September 8, 2009! The book is based on the dark side of love due to abuse. In January 5, 2010, Julie will also release By The Time You Read This, I'll Be Dead which focuses on a girl who is suicidal. She has written many more books for Older Readers and also writes for Middle Readers as well. Julie currently lives in Lakewood, Colorado with her partner Sherri. Thank you Julie for taking the time out of your busy schedule to do this interview! I cannot wait to read both of yours books :)

1) How old were you when you started writing? I was 38. Prior to that, I’d never written anything in my life.

2) What inspired you to write Rage? A reader, Alyson, wrote to me and asked if I’d write a book about dating abuse between two girls. She was in that kind of relationship and felt it was a subject no one ever talked about. She was right, of course, but I didn’t think I was the person to tackle such a tough topic. I told her she should write her own story, since she was living it. Over the course of two years, Alyson and I corresponded. She and her girlfriend had been to counseling and resolved their issues. But I’d never known anyone who came out of a domestic abuse situation feeling whole. And the books I’ve read (which are always about how guys are abusive to girls) end up with the guy being the villain and the girl being the victim. My personal belief is that each person contributes to psychological or physical violence in a relationship. Eventually, Alyson and her girlfriend broke up. She still wanted me to write her story, which I couldn’t, but now I felt I could bring my own sensibility to a story about the topic of dating abuse between girls.

3) Are the characters in the books based on someone you know? Yes, Alyson. But not really. My characters emerged slowly as the story developed.

4) What was the hardest part about writing Rage? All the violence and poverty. I hate to give away a major plot point, but anytime I have to force my characters to face their worst fears or suffer through their darkest hours of despair, it wrecks me.

5) Out of all the books you've written, which one is your favorite and why? My favorite is always the one I’m working on at the moment. All my creative energies are channeled into that book. It’s also the book I refuse to talk about until it’s done J.

6) I see in January 2010, you have another YA book coming out, By The Time You Read This, I'll Be Dead, what can we expect from this book? A lot of controversy. This is a book about a girl who’s planning her own suicide.

7) Are there any new authors that have sparked your interest? I’m more impressed with authors who are able to stay in the game, writing one great book after another. It’s incredibly difficult to make a career out of writing, so in the interest of recognizing my favorite established writers, let me list a few: James Howe, Ron Koertge, Barbara Park, M.E. Kerr, Ellen Conford, Sharon Creech, Lois Lowry, Kathe Koja, Ellen Wittlinger, Dyan Sheldon, James Marshall, Betsy Byars, Virginia Euwer Wolff, Patricia McCormick, Alex Sanchez, David Levithan, Graham McNamee, Dyan Sheldon, Carl Deuker, Kate DiCamillo, Sarah Dessen, Jack Gantos, Adam Rapp, A.M. Jenkins, Rachel Cohn, Sharon Creech, Claudia Mills, Catherine Ryan Hyde, Susan Beth Pfeffer, and on and on.

8) What book are you currently reading? After by Amy Efaw. It’s amazing. I recently read Living Dead Girl by Elizabeth Scott and I can’t get it out of my head.

9) Do you have anything to say to all your readers? Thank you for being loyal and faithful readers. Thank you for buying my books, spreading the word about them, and helping me build a career in writing. I love writing books for you as much as you love reading them. Thank you for creating a cycle of empowerment fueled by love.

10) Tell us something about yourself that no one knows about. - I always wanted to be a famous singer, but I can’t stay awake beyond ten p.m., so I’d never make the late night talk talks.

Book Review: Never Slow Dance With A Zombie by E. Van Lowe

Never Slow Dance With A Zombie by E. Van Lowe
Genre: Young Adult Fiction
Publisher: For Teen
Pages: 256
Available Now: Amazon.com

Summary: Romy and Michelle's Hight School Reunion meets Night of the Living Dead in this laugh-out-loud debut YA novel by Emmy Award-nominated TV writer E. Van Lowe
Principal Taft's 3 Simple Rules for Surviving a Zombie Uprising:
Rule #1: While in the halls, walk slowly and wear a vacant expression on your face. Zombies won't attack other zombies.
Rule #2: Never travel alone. Move in packs. Follow the crowd. Zombies detest blatant displays of individuality.
Rule #3: If a zombie should attack, do not run. Instead, throw raw steak at to him. Zombies love raw meat. This display of kindness will go a long way.On the night of her middle school graduation, Margot Jean Johnson wrote a high school manifesto detailing her goals for what she was sure would be a most excellent high school career. She and her best friend, Sybil, would be popular and, most important, have boyfriends. Three years later, they haven't accomplished a thing! Then Margot and Sybil arrive at school one day to find that most of the student body has been turned into flesh-eating zombies. When kooky Principal Taft asks the girls to coexist with the zombies until the end of the semester, they realize that this is the perfect opportunity to live out their high school dreams. All they have to do is stay alive....

My Review: Never Slow Dance With A Zombie is a super cute *arghhh* (sorry that was supposed to be a zombie growl, but it sounds more like a pirate hehe) zombie novel. E. Van Lowe's writing is funny which makes it a fun, fast paced read. I liked most of the characters, except with the exception of one. The main character Margot starts out being a self-centered brat that only cares about being popular, being invited to parties and getting a boyfriend. It seems like her whole life revolved around a manifesto list which she created that includes those wants and more. My favorite character would have to be Sybil, she is a sweet, caring girl that wants nothing more than her best friend Margot to be happy. If only Margot could see that right, or does she?...hmmm, don't want to give that away. To sum it up a little...one day Margot and Sybil go to school and pretty much 90% of the student body are turned into zombies for the exception of a few classmates, the principal and gym teacher. At first I was a little confused because their was no explanation to why this occurred, but as I read it all the answers were eventually revealed. I also enjoyed how E. Van Lowe used different, unique names for his characters instead of the cliche names found in books today. Overall, a very cute read and I definitely recommend it if you're a zombie lover! Grrrargh...is that more zombie like? Oh well, I tried :) Let me just add, E. Van Lowe is also one of the nicest author's I've met, he is extremely sweet to his fans and is always there if you have questions.
My Rating: 4.5 out of 5

Hush, Hush Book Trailer!

I will admit I'm not really a huge fan of book trailers, unless they are creative, such as Becca's trailer. She did a great job capturing the essence of her book. I <3 Patch! Book Review: Intertwined by Gena Showalter + Teaser Tuesday!

Book Review:
Intertwined by Gena Showalter
Genre: Young Adult Fiction
Publisher: Harlequin Teen

Pages: 448
Available Now: Amazon.com

Summary: Most sixteen-year-olds have friends. Aden Stone has four human souls living inside him: One can time-travel. One can raise the dead. One can tell the future. And one can possess another human. With no other family and a life spent in and out of institutions, Aden and the souls have become friends. But now they're causing him all kinds of trouble. Like, he'll blink and suddenly he's a younger Aden, reliving the past. One wrong move, and he'll change the future. Or he'll walk past a total stranger and know how and when she's going to die. He's so over it. All he wants is peace. And then he meets a girl who quiets the voices. Well, as long as he's near her. Why? Mary Ann Gray is his total opposite. He's a loner; she has friends. He doesn't care what anyone thinks; she tries to make everyone happy. And while he attracts the paranormal, she repels it. For her sake, he should stay away. But it's too late....
Somehow, they share an inexplicable bond of friendship. A bond about to be tested by a werewolf shape-shifter who wants Mary Ann for his own, and a vampire princess Aden can't resist. Two romances, both forbidden. Still, the four will enter a dark underworld of intrigue and danger but not everyone will come out alive....

My Review: Intertwined is the ultimate supernatural jam packed book I've read so far this year. The main character Aden has four human souls living inside his mind. They all have their own personalities and I actually started caring about them more than Aden. We also meet a vampire that Aden falls for and a werewolf shape-shifter that sweeps Aden's friend Mary Ann off her feet. Also, demons, witches and fairies make appearances in the book as well. My favorite character would have to be the werewolf shape-shifter because he's super sweet and he has this bad boy persona which I'm attracted to. The plot was very interesting but it took me some time to get into the story. At times the writing was a bit wordy, but besides that I enjoyed it very much. The ending left the reader wanting more, which probably means their is going to be a sequel, so I look forward to that.
My Rating: 4.6 out of 5
Author's Info:
Gena Showalter is the New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of Paranormal Romance, Contemporary Romance, and Young Adult novels from a multitude of publishers. Monday's Question Of The Day + Author Interview: Terry Spear

Monday's Question Of The Day!

Question: Out of all the books you've read, which character would you love to have as a boyfriend or girlfriend and why?

My Answer: Hm..this is a toughie since their is so many sexy characters I've read in books lately but, if I had to pick I'd say Patch from Hush, Hush or Edward from Twilight. Patch is a bad boy with a heart, and Edward is just the guy that knows exactly what to say to make a girl feel special. Combine the two and I got my perfect book boyfriend lol.

I want to hear your answers, so leave me a comment! :)

1) How old were you when you started writing?
I started making up stories when I was a kid. Not to get myself out of trouble, of course. But just loved to create stories. Never could draw even a stick figure though. So I think we're all creative in our own way. When I was in Junior High, I took a creative writing class, in addition to having to take the regular English composition. It was the first time anyone, other than myself, actually read my stories. I also used to get together with my girlfriends and make up spooky stories orally, like at Halloween time. It was a throwback to my dad who would make up his own scary tales, and pretend they were true. :)

2) What inspired you to write To Tempt The Wolf?
:) I had read a couple of historical romances where a man was shipwrecked along an English coast and the woman who rescued him was in hiding. In this case, the man is a werewolf, the coast is located in Oregon, and the woman who rescued him is being stalked. :) But with my werewolf tales, the werewolves are based on real wolves, rather than horror-type wolves. So in their wolf form, they still have their human thoughts, and when they're in their human forms, still have their wolf senses. The series, starting with Heart of the Wolf, which made Publishers Weekly's Best Books of the Year, is very hot and sexy, so should be for older teens and up.

3) Are the characters in the books based on someone you know?
Smiling here. One of my co-workers says that the hunky alpha males are all based on him. :) I'd have to say that my spunky females are based on women who believe in themselves and know they can do anything they put their mind to. As for the hunky alpha males...sure, they're all a study of my co-worker. LOL

4) What was the hardest part about writing To Tempt The Wolf?
I do a lot of research for my stories. Some of the settings are fictionalized to suit the plot. But even so, I research the areas to make it as realistic as possible. So that's the hardest part for me. Making an urban fantasy as realistic as possible.

5) Out of all the books you've written, which one is your favorite and why?
I love the one I'm currently writing, Seduced by the Wolf, because in each case, I'm totally in their heads for the duration. So whatever the current book is that I'm working on, I'm feeling their pain and pride, their joy and conflict...and I can't wait to see them reach a happily ever after.

6) I know you'll be having a blog tour for To Temp The Wolf, what can we expect from it?
Free books!!! At http://www.terry-spear.blogspot.com/ I post a listing of where I am the day of a guest blog where my publisher will be giving free books. I won't know until that day what the link will be, so it's impossible to post them here. But every week for the next 3-4 weeks, I'll be at various sites giving away a free copy of To Tempt the Wolf.

7) Are there any new authors that have sparked your interest?
Truthfully, I'm having a hard time reading anyone else's books right now because I have only a week to meet my deadline for Seduced by the Wolf. But I enjoyed Melissa Marr's work, and I don't recall the title or author, but a recent one I picked up was about the devil who wants to take the girl for his bride. It's a historical setting.

8) What book are you currently reading?
I have a stack of books to read, but no time to read anything. Such is the case with deadlines. I love to read though. I have another book I have to write before December...it's due out next fall.

9) Do you have anything to say to all your readers?
Reading is a gift to cherish all your lives. And if you like to make up stories, write them down. You never know when you might take it to the next step and become an award-winning published author!

10) Tell us something about yourself that no one knows about.
When I was younger, I was extremely shy. But when I was in creative writing, I felt so good about my stories, I was willing to stand up and share one before the class. It was a suspenseful, spooky story... :) My teacher stopped me and asked if it was a true story. My jaw dropped.. "Uhm, no." I truly didn't know it had to be a true story. "Write a true story and turn it in next time," she said, annoyed. I was crestfallen, felt two inches tall, and never, ever spoke up in class again. But it didn't stop me from writing. Never let anything keep you down. If you love it enough, follow your dreams.

ARC of Secret Society by Tom Dolby
Summary: Secrets, secrets are no fun. Secrets, secrets hurt someone. . . . An eccentric new girl. A brooding socialite. The scion of one of New York's wealthiest families. A promising filmmaker. As students at the exclusive Chadwick School, Phoebe, Lauren, Nick, and Patch already live in a world most teenagers only dream about. They didn't ask to be Society members. But when three of them receive a mysterious text message promising success and fame beyond belief, they say yes to everything—even to the harrowing initiation ceremony in a gritty warehouse downtown and to the ankh-shaped tattoo they're forced to get on the nape of their necks. Once they're part of the Society, things begin falling into place for them. Week after week, their ambitions are fulfilled. It's all perfect—until a body is found in Central Park with no distinguishing marks except for an ankh-shaped tattoo. Tom Dolby makes his teen fiction debut with this riveting novel about a dangerous society so secret that once you get in, you can never get out.

Jumping Off Swings by Jo Knowles
Summary:
One pregnancy. Four friends. It all adds up to a profound time of change in this poignant, sensitively written YA novel. Ellie remembers how the boys kissed her. Touched her. How they begged for more. And when she gave it to them, she felt loved. For a while anyway. So when Josh, an eager virgin with a troubled home life, leads her from a party to the backseat of his van, Ellie follows. But their "one-time thing" is far from perfect: Ellie gets pregnant. Josh reacts with shame and heartbreak, while their confidantes, Caleb and Corinne, deal with their own complex swirl of emotions. No matter what Ellie chooses, all four teenagers will be forced to grow up a little faster as a result. Told alternately from each character’s point of view, this deeply insightful novel explores the aftershocks of the biggest decision of one fragile girl’s life — and the realities of leaving innocence behind.
