Books for Thought: How do you organize your bookshelves?

Previously known as Monday's Question of the Day, Books For Thought is a feature where I post a book-related question up for discussion. I am open to all opinions and enjoy reading diverse comments from my lovely followers. I look forward to picking your minds!

Have a question idea? Share it here and I'll feature your blog in this post.

How do you organize your bookshelves?
(Ex: By title, author, genre, etc.)

My Response: I usually organize my books by height. I hate when short books are in between long ones, it's a weird pet peeve of mine. I tend to keep series together though, but it's hard when you have paperbacks and hardcovers mixed in. I'm thinking about putting them in alphabetical order, even though it'll be a huge pain. I also have a bookshelf that's primarily review books, that way I can keep an eye on the release dates without losing any in my store bought books.

What are your bookish thoughts?

I try to keep them together by genre, then author. I have all my YA books together, Non-fic, Romance, UF, etc. It's hard though when you have books by authors like Rachel Vincent and Kelley Armstrong that span different genres. "Try" is the key word here. I don't have big enough book shelves to really keep them all together like that so they sometimes get shoved everywhere.

My main bookcase is organized by colour! :) And my second bookcase holds a few series that are organized and then my review books. :)

I like to keep horizontal piles, largest on the bottom, smaller on top. And I LOVE mixing books that I think most people wouldn't mix, but that go together for some weird reason. Like putting Twilight in with Wuthering Heights, then putting Romeo and Juliet and Perfect Chemistry on top. Most of my new books are on Kindle, so I try to only keep books that I really, really love!

I organize my book by genre and then alphabetically by author's last name. All of my contemporaries are together than paranormal, historical, etc...but the very first shelf on my YA bookshelf is all hard covers. I have all of those put together because they don't stack right with the others but I've been toying with putting them together anyway. We'll see.

Like you, I also organize my books by height because they look most organized that way. Also, I separate the paperbacks from the hardcovers because I kinda dislike the appearance of the thick ones taking the spotlight off the thin ones. :)

Primarily by height, yes BUT I have a separate book corner for each of my favorite authors whether they are paperbacks or hardcovers. At least, I will be able to pick my "comfort book" everytime I want to read and feel good after having such a crappy day!

I have two bookshelves. One contains YA books that are to be read. I organize these by height and keep hardcovers together and paperbacks together. Then I have another bookshelf containing books that I've read and various adult books to be read.

We have similar styles of organizing our bookshelves. Here is my books for thought post. http://vintagebookworm.blogspot.com/2011/09/books-for-thought-7.html

I organize novels, alphabetically by author's last name...Guess that has to do with being a retired librarian! My nonfiction, I simply group by subject matter.
