Spending time with her best friend Tatiana, dreaming about kissing Tatiana's twin brother Fin, and swimming competitively are her only sanctuary. The girls plan to leave their drab lakeside town far behind for college. But when Tatchi fails to return home after a family emergency, and no one knows where the family has gone, Ash chooses to do something drastic to find them. Ashlyn is about to discover what she’d thought to be true her whole life, wasn’t, and the truth, too fantastical to imagine. Summit Entertainment has set hot young scribe Evan Daugherty to adapt dystopian thriller Divergent, based on the young adult novel by 22-year-old author Veronica Roth. FinePrint's Pouya Shabazian is producing the project with Doug Wick and Lucy Fisher via their Red Wagon banner. Daugherty's writing credits include Universal's high profile Snow White and the Huntsman, starring Kristen Stewart and Chris Hemsworth, and Shrapnel, directed by John McTiernan. Roth's YA novel, published by HarperCollins imprint Katherine Tegen Books, hit the stands last month and quickly made the New York Times' bestseller list, where it remains. Divergent has parallels to the book series Hunger Games, which is being made into a film series.

CBS Films has tapped up-and-coming writers Andrew Barrer and Gabe Ferrari to adapt "Legend," Marie Lu's forthcoming novel that the company hopes will be a major young adult franchise. The hiring comes two weeks after CBS tapped Jonathan Levine to direct the adaptation, which is being produced by Marty Bowen and Wyck Godfrey of "The Twilight Saga" fame. CBS has been making the creative hires against the backdrop of Book Expo in New York, where the book has been generated great reviews. Putnam is making the tome, due out on November 29, one of its big holiday sellers, ordering an initial print run of over 350,000. According to the company, the book "takes place in Los Angeles over a hundred years in the future, when North America is split into two warring nations. "Legend" focuses on Day, a 15-year old Robin Hood figure who happens to be the nation's most wanted criminal, and June, a teenage prodigy who is hired to hunt him down. The pair are caught in a game of cat and mouse until an impossible truth about their totalitarian leaders forces them to work together."

Another film about faeries is on its way to the big screen. Following this summer’s announcement that Miley Cyrus is to star in Disney’s adaptation of Aprilynne Pike’s teenage faerie tale “Wings," Variety reports that Universal is working on a movie based on “Wicked Lovely,” the first in a series of young adult books by Melissa Marr. The projects aren’t very similar, however. Disney’s film, which is being produced by "Twilight" producers Marty Bowen and Wyck Godfrey, involves a seemingly normal girl who sprouts wings, making her a human-sized faerie. “Wicked,” on the other hand, features a teenage girl who can merely see the creatures — though she is offered the chance to join that world by a faerie suitor who takes human form in order to pursue her.

Fans of young-adult fiction -- or anyone with young adults in their lives -- probably are familiar with "The Maze Runner," James Dashner's fantasy tale. The first book in Dashner's planned trilogy -- about a group of boys, and one girl, who are trapped in an alternative universe called The Glade and must navigate an entity known as The Maze to escape -- has been on the New York Times paperback bestseller list for nearly three months after coming out in hardcover in the fall of 2009. The second book, "The Scorch Trials," was released this past fall and has just completed a one-month run on the newspaper's hardcover list. Like Suzanne Collins' ultra-popular "The Hunger Games" novels and other young-adult publishing phenomena, Dashner's books use genre conventions to explore the vagaries of growing up. And like "Hunger Games," Dasher's stories are poised to make the leap to the big screen. A film version is set up at Fox, and "Twilight" director Catherine Hardwicke signed on a month ago to direct the adaptation. Now a source close to the film says the project has hired a screenwriter, and he's an interesting choice: Noah Oppenheim.

Oh, wow! That's a ton of great news (I haven't read LEGEND yet but am absolutely dying to!). And, while I'm not a huge fan of 50 Cent, my students are and his book sounds perfect for them, since I teach in a bit of a rough area and they deal with the constant pressure to join gangs, experiment (and sell!) drugs, and lots of bullying.
Happy reading (and, soon, watching!),

I've heard of a lot of this news but thinks for putting it one your blog with a nice little bow on the top! A lot of really great things in the works right now.

I love most of this news (especially Wicked Lovely being optioned), but Catherine Hardwicke directing The Maze Runner film?! I thought it was generally agreed that the direction in Twilight was strange, yet she keeps being signed for films based on YA books?

I am really excited for Chris Colfer's series though. He seems to be passionate about writing it so hopefully he will turn out some great books!

Thanks for the updates! :)

I really love this feature and the cover for Everblue is stunning!

It's interesting that Legend by Marie Lu is already being made into such a huge franchise and it's not even close to release. I am very curious about it now.

I'll be heading over to Veronica Roth's page because I just have to know...
