1) Tell us a little about your female protagonist, Delia Truesdale. Was it difficult writing her emotions when she learned her mother was missing?
JS: Writing Delia’s emotions about anything is pretty challenging, because there are usually several layers involved – a lot of the time she refuses to acknowledge what she’s really feeling because if she did she’d totally lose it! And because I’m writing in the first person, there’s no all-seeing narrator to let us know that what Delia actually says is only part of the story. Instead, I have to figure out other ways to show that there’s more going on inside than Delia’s explicitly telling us. Sometimes she makes an offhand or oblique comment – like in Chapter Two of Unraveled, where she mentions the “thick feeling” in her throat. She can’t admit to crying or even wanting to cry, but we all know the warning signs. How other characters behave toward her can also provide clues – the expectations and reactions of the people around her act as a sort of mirror.
2) Was there a time in your life where you had to pick up everything you knew and move to a different place?
JS: Only in the normal, boring ways and only by choice, like going off to college – which is why I write fiction rather than memoirs! Delia’s definitely had a more interesting time of it, though she’s also had to deal with a lot. My own road has been much smoother, but it tends to be the bumps in the road that make for an interesting story.
3) What can your readers expect from the sequel, And Then I Found Out The Truth? Will there be a third book in the series?
JS: Unraveled ends with a bit of a cliff-hanger – part of the mystery is solved, but there are still more questions to answer before the evil-doers can be vanquished and everyone else can live happily ever after. That’s what Truth is about – getting to the ultimate bottom of things once and for all.
As for a third book – none is currently planned, but characters occasionally have a way of surprising you….
