Question: Do you read books in a series back to back or take a break in between?
(Thanks to The Book Vixen for the question idea!)
My Answer: Great question! I think it all depends on how addictive the series is. When I read The Mortal Instrument series or the Twilight Saga I couldn't stop the urge for the next book. However, if the next book is not out yet I have no choice but to take a break. Their also has been times I start a series and decide to take a break from it. For instance, the Wicked Lovely Series started out okay but didn't grab my attention enough for me to start reading the sequel. So, it mainly depends on how much I enjoyed the first book in the series.
I'd love to know your thoughts, so leave me a comment :) Have a question idea? E-mail me at lafemmereaders@yahoo.com and I'll give you credit!

I had the same problem with the House of Night Series. I started reading the third book and in the middle, I got fed up with it and I haven't read it sense. That was sometime last fall!
Usually I like to take breaks in between, I think it makes me more excited for the next book and I like mulling over the book for a while before I pick up the next one. I think usually that way, I can pick up on things I would have missed before if I hadn't thought about it when I read the second book!
Basically...it just kinda builds up the suspense for me :) But like you said, it kinda depends on how good the series is.
I like taking breaks in between book series. I don't like reading them all at once since I like the anticipation of waiting to read the next one and thinking about what I think will happen.
I always try to start a series from the first book. And as for reading back to back, or with pauses in between, I think it depends on how many are in the series. If there are only 3-4 I can probably just read all of them, anything more than that and I would need a break in between.
I like to take breaks so i dont burn out:)
I am trying to read all the books in series back to back, yes.Unfortunately, this is not always the case as I sometimes have to wait for the next one to be published and that can take a year.So I am "forced" to take a break even though I really don't want to.Whatever the case, when I finish reading a book in a series,I always scribble down some details of the book,in case I forget till then next book comes out.Examples : Vampire Academy, Vampire Diaries, Sookie Stackhouse,Blue Bloods,Private.
It depends. I could've sat and read the Hunger Games series all together. But there have been others where I've needed a break, like the Crank series by Ellin Hopkins. Too emotional or real or something. It's excellent, though!
For me, it's always depended on the books in the series. If it's really good, then I try to read all of the books back-to-back ... unless the next book in the series isn't out yet, then I have to wait. I'm usually patient, but there are some series where I count down the days for the next book to come out - Lords of the Underworld (Gena Showalter) and Blue Bloods (Melissa de la Cruz) being two very good examples of this. I think I was fortunate to be completely unaware of the Twilight Saga until Breaking Dawn came out because I don't know if I would have been able to wait on those books. ;) Then there are some series that I read, like House of Night, that frustrate me to no end but I've read so many that I feel as though I have to finish the series ... but, I'm never in any real hurry to read them.
Some series, like Wicked Lovely, I think would benefit from taking a break in between books. Others, like Twilight or Harry Potter, I think it would be best to have them all before starting :)
Great question!
I tend to take breaks in between, unless I really loved it and then I might actually hold off on reading the 2nd book until the next ones are out.
Great question! I normally skip around since I don't always have the second book right on hand. I do like reading them in a row though, since I don't have time to forget anything :)
If all of the books are available, then I read them all back-to-back. Otherwise, I read until they're gone and read other things while waiting for the release of the sequel(s).
You pretty much summed up my feelings on this question! I'll add that I prefer to start a series once every book has already been published because sometimes waiting for the next installment is torturous!
If the books are out, I tend to read them straight through... if it's a series not fully out yet and I really am into it, I'll get it as soon as it comes out and put things on hold for it- I guess the equivalent to read back to back if available. Even if the series isn't wowing, I will usually keep going just to get through it.
I sway both ways. I like reading a series back-to-back so I don't forget details in the storyline. But sometimes I need a break. I like to bounce back and force between YA and adult romance (that YA builds up a lot of sexual tension and adult romance is my release LOL).
Thanks for asking my question! I've been wondering what other people's takes were :)
It depends. I tend to like to have 2 or 3 in a series before I'll even start it. The only exception being if I won a copy or got an ARC from a publisher, then I'll go ahead and read the first book. In Robb's "In Death" series, I actually collected about 30 of the books and read them in 6 to 8 book batches over the next year. If I find myself getting burned out or less interested in a series, I might read 1 book at a time but not often as I'm a marathon series reader.
I never read a series back to back. I really prefer to take a break in between. I guess I just need variety! I'm a HUGE Anne Rice fan and I still have not read her entire Vampire Chronicles. Shocking, I know! And I'm just now reading Eclipse this month before the movie comes out. Everyone thinks I'm crazy that I've not read the entire series!
Okay Michelle you HAVE to finish Vampire Chronicles!! Twilight is good but nothing will ever beat the good ole fashion vampires that Anne writes about!
I agree with you Eleni it depends on the series. Wicked Lovely is a good example. I am in no hurry to read Radiant Shadows. However I can hardly wait to read Mockingjay!!!! Or City of Fallen Angles!! Some series I think need to be read back to back because you can't put them down. Good question!
I have to agree. It depends on how much I enjoy the series and the characters. If it's something I love - Mortal Instruments would be one of mine too - I'll devour them ASAP!
