Summary: IN THE ENCLAVE, YOUR SCARS SET YOU APART, and the newly born will change the future. Sixteen-year-old Gaia Stone and her mother faithfully deliver their quota of three infants every month. But when Gaia’s mother is brutally taken away by the very people she serves, Gaia must question whether the Enclave deserves such loyalty. A stunning adventure brought to life by a memorable heroine, this dystopian debut will have readers racing all the way to the dramatic finish.

My Review: Holy cannoli! *Bowing down to Caragh* Birthmarked, was a beautifully written dystopian novel. I was stunned with her exquisite words and plot. The world she created was realistic and creative. I wouldn't be surprised if 400 years from now the enclave starts existing. Gaia and her mother were midwives. Each month they served the enclave by handing over the first three newborns. These babies were taken into an environment where education was valued, healthy living, and the chance to pro-create with suitable partners. On the outside, people were considered to be uneducated and classless.

One day, Gaia's parents were captured due to treason against the enclave. She was in utter confusion and didn't understand why her parents were taken away. However, she decided to sneak out of her world to find them. Along the way her midwife instinct took over where she committed a crime that led her to prison. There, I met Leon. *sighs* There was something so sexy and sweet about him. Gaia and Leon meshed well together. They were both very strong mentally and smart enough to take risks. Gaia is one of the bravest female protagonist that I've read in a while. Her whole life crumbled before her eyes and yet she remained courageous and focused on her tasks. The whole book from start to finish was suspenseful and full of shocking twists. Now, the ending killed me! There was such a cliffhanger, I hope the sequel comes out soon. I conclude with, everyone needs to read this perfect example of what a dystopian book should be like.
