I Want You Back by E. Van Lowe

When we meet our 16 year old protagonist, Emy, she tells us:

To begin with, I’m not a nice girl. Don’t get me wrong, I used to be a nice girl. I used to be kind, and helpful, considerate and thoughtful. The kind of girl who went to all of her boyfriend’s games, even though she hates basketball; the kind of girl who helped her boyfriend study for his English final while she should have been studying for her own calculus final—and maybe she would have done better than that C; the kind of girl the boys at school lovingly call, oh, what’s that cute little name they have for us again? Oh, yes—Doormat.

I Want You Back is the story of 16 year-old, Emy Grant, who uses magic to ensnare the boy of her dreams.

Sounds cool right!? So hurry up and subscribe to his site you don't wanna miss a chapter! :)

Book Review: The Betrayal of Natalie Hargrove by Lauren Kate

The Betrayal of Natalie Hargrove by Lauren Kate
Genre: Young Adult Fiction
Release Date: November 12, 2009
Publisher: Razorbill
Pages: 248
Received from: Publisher

Summary: A steamy Southern beauty makes one fatal mistake. Natalie Hargrove would kill to be her high school’s Palmetto Princess. But her boyfriend Mike King doesn’t share her dream and risks losing the honor of Palmetto Prince to Natalie’s nemesis, Justin Balmer. So she convinces Mike to help play a prank on Justin. . . one that goes terribly wrong. They tie him to the front of the church after a party—when they arrive the next morning, Justin is dead. From blackmail to buried desire, dark secrets to darker deeds, Natalie unravels. She never should’ve messed with fate. Fate is the one thing more twisted than Natalie Hargrove.

My Review: I must say the book started out a little slow, I wasn't really connecting with Natalie on a deeper level, she just seemed like a one trick pony. She only seemed to care about her reputation and winning the title of Princess with her boyfriend Mike on her side. I really liked Mike though, he wasn't as self-centered as Natalie, however he was sort of a punk. He would do anything to make Natalie happy, even cover up her mistakes, which I won't give away! Her character kind of reminded me of Sarah Michelle Gellar in the movie Cruel Intentions. Natalie would do anything to win. Around page 100, I was shocked at the unfortunate events and couldn't help but say out loud, "what!?" After, I got over hating Natalie I slowly got to learn why she acted the way she did and ended up feeling sorry for her. But my favorite part of the book was the ending, all my questions were answered and again I was amazed at such an unpredictable outcome. Overall, The Betrayal of Natalie Hargrove surpassed my expectations. Lauren Kate is an extraordinary writer and definitely knows how to throw in some crazy twists! I also learned fate could bite ya on the ass if you mess with it! lol.
My Rating: 4.5 out of 5
Author's Info:
Lauren Kate recently finished her M.A. in Creative Writing at UC Davis, where she also teaches. She lives and writes in an old farm house in Winters, California. Her first novel, The Betrayal of Natalie Hargrove goes on sale one month before Fallen.

Book Review: The Secret Year + Giveaway!

The Secret Year by Jennifer R. Hubbard
Genre: Young Adult Fiction
Release Date: January 7, 2010
Publisher: Viking Juvenile
Pages: 192
Received From: Publisher

Summary: Take Romeo and Juliet. Add The Outsiders. Mix thoroughly. Colt and Julia were secretly together for an entire year, and no one—not even Julia’s boyfriend— knew. They had nothing in common, with Julia in her country club world on Black Mountain and Colt from down on the flats, but it never mattered. Until Julia dies in a car accident, and Colt learns the price of secrecy. He can’t mourn Julia openly, and he’s tormented that he might have played a part in her death. When Julia’s journal ends up in his hands, Colt relives their year together at the same time that he’s desperately trying to forget her. But how do you get over someone who was never yours in the first place?

My Review: The Secret Year was quick, decent but unfortunately predictable. I liked the premise but the creativity was lacking at times. However, I did love how Jennifer started the book with this sentence, "Julia was killed on Labor Day on her way home from a party." I immediately started paying attention after that first sentence! It's straight to the point. I really enjoyed the characters as well, especially Colt. He was a simple, down to earth character that quickly won me over. Since Julia passed away on the first page, her whole personality was shown through Colt's memories/flashbacks and a notebook that Julia wrote just for him. I loved reading the passages to Colt, some were really poetic but also sensual. Their relationship was very secretive due to the fact that Julia had a boyfriend and they came from two different worlds. I felt bad for Colt because he couldn't mourn publicly because he tried to keep the secret even after her death. Overall, it's a good book but it didn't wow me.
My Rating: 4.3 out of 5

Book Review: The Ex Games by Jennifer Echols

The Ex Games by Jennifer Echols
Genre: Young Adult/Romantic Comedy
Release Date: Available Now
Publisher: Simon Pulse
Pages: 336
Received From: Author

Summary: Brace yourself for the battle of the exes.... Hayden and Nick used to be a hot item, but their brief affair ended with a highly publicized breakup. Now the two are "just friends," excluding the occasional flirtation. When Hayden wins the girls' division of a local snowboarding competition, Nick is unimpressed, claiming that Hayden wouldn't have a chance against a guy. Hayden calls Nick's bluff and challenges him to a head-to-head boarding contest. Their mutual friends quickly take sides, the girls on Hayden's and the boys on Nick's, making for an all-out battle of the sexes. This friendly competition is bound to get heated -- and they might end up igniting some old flames.

My Review:
Two words to describe the The Ex Games, cute and funny! I enjoyed the storyline and quickly became involved in Hayden and Nick's dysfunctional relationship. I really liked Hayden and her friends, they all had nice personalities. Their character's can easily be relatable to teens and young adult girls. Hayden's ex, Nick, well...I have mixed feelings about him. In the beginning I hated him because he was such a jerk but as time passed he grew on me. He's one of those characters that you start to like once you get to know them on a deeper level. I also enjoyed all the snowboarding terminology, I really want to snowboard now! Overall, a quick fun read that I'm sure will be enjoyable to romantic comedy lovers.
My Rating: 4.5 out of 5
Author Interview:
Jennifer is the author of The Ex Games and writes teen romantic comedies for Simon Pulse and young adult dramas for MTV Books.

Thank you for doing this interview with me Jennifer!

1) How old were you when you started writing?
I don’t know, but I do remember that my third grade teacher “published” my poems by copying them for the class. When I was a tween and a teen, I wrote a lot of short stories and started a lot of novels!

2) What inspired you to write The Ex Games?
My editor wanted a snowboarding book. I thought of the title, then built the story around that.

3) Are the characters in the books based on someone you know?
I never base characters on people I know, but I draw from my experience with people in general. The heroine of The Ex Games, Hayden, is a character type I’ve met often and I love to be around. She has a hard time keeping her mouth shut. I am ASTOUNDED at what comes out of her mouth. She turns the most mundane situation into something hilarious.

4) What was the hardest part about writing The Ex Games?
The snowboarding scenes. I have snowskied a lot but I have never snowboarded, so I watched the Winter X Games and snowboarding DVDs to try to get that right.

5) I see you have a romantic drama coming out July 2010 called Forget You...can you tell us a little bit about this book?
After her mother’s breakdown, a teen fears she's going crazy herself as she tries to piece together what happened the night of a car wreck she can't remember, and why her darkly handsome arch-enemy has fallen in love with her. I am so excited about this book! I’ve already discussed cover ideas with my editor, and I will start revising it as soon as I finish what I’m doing right now...see #6!

6) Do you have any other projects you're currently working on?
I’m writing the sequel to The Boys Next Door. It’s called Endless Summer and it will be out next June.

7) Are there any new authors that have sparked your interest?
I have to admit that my head is in the sand because I am facing a deadline...see #6!

8) What book are you currently reading?
The Splendor Falls by Rosemary Clement-Moore, a ghost story set in my home state of Alabama, and it is wonderful.

9) Do you have anything to say to all your readers?
Yes--thank you! Thank you for buying my books, blogging about them, and telling your friends about them. It’s really something for an author’s sales to be good in a bad economy, and I feel very, very lucky and grateful. It took me a long time to get a book published in the first place, so I never take any of this for granted.

10) Tell us something about yourself that no one knows about.
I just had a birthday!

*Eleni: Happy belated birthday Jennifer!*

Eat, Pray, Love Movie News!

I'm sure some of you have heard of Eat, Pray, Love by Elizabeth Gilbert, I attempted to read this book once, the beginning was interesting but towards the middle it was Zzzzz's for me so I never finished it! :/ However, I know some people that really loved this book, so great news, it's being turned into a movie! It's release is supposed to be in 2011? I'm not so sure because some sites say 2010, anywho, also the infamous Julia Roberts is playing the main role! I love Julia, so I'm sure she'll make the film amazing :) Their isn't a trailer yet, but I'll let you know when it comes out! Below is some info on the movie!

Plot: A woman who once made it her goal in life to marry and rear a family finds her priorities suddenly shifting in director Ryan Murphy's adaptation of author Elizabeth Gilbert's best-selling memoir. In the eyes of many, Gilbert was a woman who had it all -- a loving husband, a great apartment, and a weekend home -- but sometimes one realizes too little too late that they haven't gotten what they truly wanted from life. On the heels of a painful divorce, the woman who had previously looked forward to a contented life of domesticated bliss sets out to explore the world and seek out her true destiny. Brad Pitt and Dede Gardner produce a film starring Pretty Woman and Erin Brockovich beauty Julia Roberts.

Though we’ll feature the top five on our site for comments, the judging WON’T happen by popular vote (so basically, we don't care which contestant has the most friends). Dina and I will personally read them.

Book Review: Winter's End by Jean-Claude Mourlevat

Winter's End by Jean-Claude Mourlevat
Translated by Anthea Bell
Genre: Young Adult Fiction
Release Date: November 10, 2009
Publisher: Candlewick Press
Pages: 432
From: Publisher

Summary: In a gripping dystopian novel, four teenagers risk impossible odds to fight against tyranny in a world of dangerous choices — and reemerging hope. Escape. Milena, Bartolomeo, Helen, and Milos have left their prison-like boarding schools far behind, but their futures remain in peril. Fleeing across icy mountains from a terrifying pack of dog-men sent to hunt them down, they are determined to take up the fight against the despotic government that murdered their parents years before. Only three will make it safely to the secret headquarters of the resistance movement. The fourth is captured and forced to participate in a barbaric game for the amusement of the masses — further proof of the government’s horrible brutality. Will the power of one voice be enough to rouse a people against a generation of cruelty? Translated from the French, this suspenseful story of courage, individualism, and freedom has resonated with young readers across the globe.

My Review: Winter's End is a refreshing, action packed, emotional roller coaster ride. I enjoyed the narration and the details helped me set up a scene in my mind. The chapter opens up by describing the harsh treatment that Milena, Bartolomeo, Helen, and Milos suffer in the boarding school. It sort of reminded me of a twisted comparison between Madeline and Another Faust. I learned to care for each character and also distinguished their personalities. The book takes a surprising turn after the teens escape the school and go on a journey to look for freedom. The hardships that they face is unbelievable since the "Phalange" who is a fascist organization in power seeks to kill them. I also loved the fact that with all the running and hiding, they still managed to keep some romance. I sometimes "awwed" at the adorable comments between the first time lovers among the teens. I really liked the concept of a bunch of teens running away to succeed freedom but also causing an uproar that will aim to take down the government. However, the ending was bittersweet, I couldn't help but feel happy and sad at the same time. Overall, a nice entertaining YA book.
My Rating: 4.5 out of 5
Author's Info:

My Answer: I would have to say I enjoyed Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte and Great Expectations by Charles Dickens. Most of the classics weren't that bad, but I HATED Middlemarch by George Eliot, it bored me to death so I gave up and used cliffnotes lol :)
