Books For Thought: Second book in series? Hate them or love them?

Second book in series? Hate them or love them?
(Question Credit: Julie from My 5 Monkeys)

My Response: Thanks Julie for this question! In all honesty, it depends on the series. I've read continuations that didn't reach the level of the first book. It saddens me when that happens because it makes the story take on a disappointing turn. However, the second book in a series could also wow us beyond belief. I really don't mind them, but I sometimes miss when a novel is just a novel. Waiting for the next installment could sometimes be very difficult. Especially, when a year passes and you have to go back to re-read the ending of the first book to remember how it left us hanging. Overall though, I am all for series, just as long as they keep us addicted until the end.

What are your bookish thoughts?

I've been disappointed in several of them. It's almost like the authors were trying to save all the "good stuff" for the last book of the trilogy.

I think second books are good if they fit...meaning, if you have a trilogy that could be two books only? I'd rather have that and love them both. Nothing wrong with just having ONE sequel! Plus, like you said, I have a hard time waiting for the next book in series. I find I can't quite keep up these days with all the new books coming out and not having all the time I'd want to read. haha

I think second books are great at times when the first doesn't exactly sum everything up. It could also the opposite vice versa.

It's such a crap shoot. Sometimes I LOVE the second book, other times I hate it. Rarely is there a second book that's on par with the first. I can think of a few series in which I liked the second book more than the first, but those are few and far between. More often than not, I'm left disappointed.
