Beautiful Book Hangover: Enclave by Ann Aguirre

Beautiful Book Hangover will be posted sporadically on La Femme Readers. According to the Urban Dictionary, "a book hangover is a headache you get after staying up into the wee hours of the morning staring at teeny tiny print." As book addicts we've all experienced this type of hangover many times, so why not share them with each other? You are more than welcome to use this idea, just as long as you credit me.

Enclave (Razorland, #1) by Ann Aguirre
Reading Level: Young Adult
Release Date: Available Now
Publisher: Feiwel & Friends
Pages: 272

Summary: WELCOME TO THE APOCALYPSE In Deuce's world, people earn the right to a name only if they survive their first fifteen years. By that point, each unnamed 'brat' has trained into one of three groups-Breeders, Builders, or Hunters, identifiable by the number of scars they bear on their arms. Deuce has wanted to be a Huntress for as long as she can remember. As a Huntress, her purpose is clear--to brave the dangerous tunnels outside the enclave and bring back meat to feed the group while evading ferocious monsters known as Freaks. She's worked toward this goal her whole life, and nothing's going to stop her, not even a beautiful, brooding Hunter named Fade. When the mysterious boy becomes her partner, Deuce's troubles are just beginning. Down below, deviation from the rules is punished swiftly and harshly, and Fade doesn't like following orders. At first she thinks he's crazy, but as death stalks their sanctuary, and it becomes clear the elders don't always know best, Deuce wonders if Fade might be telling the truth. Her partner confuses her; she's never known a boy like him before, as prone to touching her gently as using his knives with feral grace. As Deuce's perception shifts, so does the balance in the constant battle for survival. The mindless Freaks, once considered a threat only due to their sheer numbers, show signs of cunning and strategy... but the elders refuse to heed any warnings. Despite imminent disaster, the enclave puts their faith in strictures and sacrifice instead. No matter how she tries, Deuce cannot stem the dark tide that carries her far from the only world she's ever known.

Why it kept me up: One of my favorite categories in YA is dystopian fiction, especially when it's done well. A perfect example would be Enclave by Ann Aguirre. I'm glad my buddy Tori from the Book Faery urged me to read it the moment she finished it. The first installment delivered so much fresh action and nail-biting scenes that I couldn't put it down. It's one of those stories that makes you think about it when you take a break from reading. I love Ann's writing and I simply can't imagine how striking the rest of series will be. I even made my sister in law read it just because I loved it so damn much. If you haven't read it, you need to asap!

Time of sleep: 1:30 AM (Waking up 5 hours later was rough but worth it!)

Which book kept you up all night this week?

Enclave was good. But the book that kept me up was In the Arms of Stone Angels by Jordan Dane. I just can't stop thinking about it (even through the yawns). Happy reading!

I keep on seeing this mentioned although I never knew really what it was about. Dystopian? Yes, please! I'll have to try it out to the growing list! :)

I stayed up until about 3am finishing DIVERGENT on release day and I can't get it out of my head. Favorite book of the year, so far!

I just finished Enclave this week and I felt the same way! I meant to only take a peek at the first few pages, but before I knew it I was completely sucked in.

Haha I'm so glad to hear that you enjoyed it as much as I did!

Speaking of Ann Aguirre, I've been reading her UF Blue Diablo, and holy crap, it took me a chapter to get into the story, but I am hooked right now! The only thing keeping me from reading right now are BEA schedules and lists lol.

This week, I was up until about 2 in the morning reading Flying Blind. I didn't finish it, but I read 85% of the book in one sitting. Too bad the ending started dragging on :/
