Books For Thought: How do you all balance reading into your busy lives?

I couldn't post this on Monday, so here it is on Thursday! :)

Previously known as Monday's Question of the Day, Books For Thought is a Monday feature where I post a book-related question up for discussion. I am open to all opinions and enjoy reading diverse comments from my lovely followers. I look forward to picking your minds! Have a question idea?

Share it here and I'll give you credit.

Sometimes school, work or being a full time mom cuts into book time. How do you all balance reading into your busy lives?

My Response: Can't we all just have jobs that consists of us reading books all day? I wish! In my case, I read every chance I get. I just started working after a year of unemployment, so 45 hours a week can kill my reading time. However, I read during my one hour train ride to work. I wasn't blogging while I was in school, so my reading material usually surrounded boring literature. That's what I get for majoring in English, sure glad that's over. But, for mothers, I have no idea how they balance taking care of kids, blogging and reading. I seriously applaud them, it definitely takes a super woman to handle all that. Hopefully I'll be able to do the same when my time comes. Now, not to be gross, but I actually do a lot of reading in the bathroom. Yes, yes too much information, but it's the truth. When my loud mouth brother is home, it's the quietest part of the house, so it is what it is. ;)

What are your bookish thoughts?

It is a tough balance with jobs and kids. I do most of my reading after kids are in bed. So I'm lucky to get in an hour a night. Not enough time but will have to do for now.

I get frustrated sometimes with the lack of time I have to read. With that being said, I read every spare moment I get, whether it's a 15 minute break at work or 20-30 minutes before bed. I don't have kids yet so I can't even imagine how much less time I'll have to read!

It's a great idea that you're reading during your train ride. Great way to "kill" time and enjoy a book. :-)

I read every single chance I get! I bring my book to work with me and read a couple pages when no one is paying attention! :) I also try and read for at least 30 minutes before I go to sleep. I agree with you on the mothers thing. I have no idea how they are able to find time to read and blog along with everything else. I applaud them with you! :)

I am one of the few that gets to read at work. Since I dispatch, I basically sit in front of a computer all day and I am bored. So I read. It works out for me great.

LOL Eleni! It's not really gross, but there's a stigma about it so people don't talk about it. I bet everyone does it though. I do. It's convenient if I'm reading a Kindle book cause I always have my phone with me, so if I'm in the bathroom I can just open that app haha! I also read while taking a bath (thankfully no books have fallen in the tub!). I can't read on the commute since I drive myself, but I do read on my fifteen minute breaks at work as well as my 30 minute lunch break. It's bad, but I also neglect some school reading (why read it when we don't even cover most of it and I can do my assignments without it?) to read books I want to read instead. If I'm going shopping with someone else, like regular grocery shopping, errands, and I'm not driving, I'll read in the car. Basically any chance I get. I always have Kindle books available on my phone and I carry my Kindle with me to work everyday and sometimes to other places. If I'm reading a "real" book, I carry that with me.

I read in the morning before I have to be anywhere, during lunch, right before bed, and I don't watch TV, so that gives me a lot of reading time too. My sisters prefer to pull all nighters to get their reading in and my aunt likes to read in the tub.

Blogging does suck up some of my reading time. When I'm at home, I usually don't read because I'm messing around on the computer. I read a lot at work. I can't read a paper book while I'm working, but I can read on my iPod e-reader. I read during my lunch break and during my other breaks during the day. I probably get in 1-1.5 hrs of reading time during work.

I mostly read late at night - I don't have enough "waiting time" (appointments, after-school pick-ups, etc) opportunities anymore. It's hard, but if it's a really good book, then I don't mind a sleepless night :)

It's harder to squeeze in time to blog though, and I really have to force myself to work at it. It's even harder to take time to check out what other bloggers are doing - and I'm working on that as well!

I just cram in reading whenever I have the chance. It's less 'balancing' and more 'using free time wisely.'

I do most my reading between my classes at school. That's when i get the most time, after school, work, and social life. If I don't get time then, I do this thing where I separate my time into 20 ir 30 minutes intervals, in which I do homework for a little bit and then read. I go back and forth to avoid hw headaches.

hehe - I read in the bathroom too. I'm sure a ton of people do it but no one likes to talk about it. But being a Mom - sometimes the bathroom is the only place I can have a minute to myself! My daughter learned the word 'privacy' very early :)
When my little was first born it was hard to find time to read. However, I did master feeding baby with one hand while holding a book with the other ;)
Now I read after my little one goes to bed - or when she wants to watch a movie. We cuddle on the couch together.
And at work it's audio books almost all the time.
When you love something you make the time for it :)

Ah, yes, I forgot about that! While actually working, I listen to audiobooks...but I mainly listen to ones that I've already read for a refresher.

When my kids were babies I did a lot of reading while nursing and when the baby fell asleep I wouldn't get up right away because I needed to rest and my family would kind of leave me alone because I was with the baby and looked busy. I listen to books on cd in the car, ususally kid friendly ones, in the car when going to work or on errands and I read before bed at night. There are only two nights a week I watch tv so on the other nights any free time can be used to read. Weekends I try to be a little more flexible and sometimes let my kids watch a movie so I can read for an hour while with them but not watching the movie. Blogging is harder since I went back to work this year and no longer have the chance of a nap break in the afternoon anymore. You make it work if you need to!

WOW! I totally have to answer this! I can't stand life getting in the way of my reading, lol! It bugs me to read books throughout the weekdays because I'm a "read a book in one sitting" type of person so I can never read a chapter here or a chapter there, it just bugs me. So, I TRY to find time to read during my weekends but even then I still can't find time. I always tell myself to make time.

I still need to find that balance.

Between working 25-40 hours a week and taking college classes online I don't have tons of free time. I try to read at night for at least an hour once I get off work. Sometimes I even can read some of a book while at work since I work at night there is not much that needs to be done. I have never liked just picking up a book for 10 or 15 minutes on breaks or while standing in line somewhere, as soon as I get into the story I would have to put it down so I like larger blocks of time.

I'm with you, when you find a job where we can read all day, let me know! :-) I also read in the bathroom, in fact was just thinking in a public restroom the other day how I'd rather be at home so I could be reading. I also live alone, so I read when I eat my meals. I read during commercials when I'm watching live TV. I even read during DVR commercials sometimes. I take a book almost everywhere I go, keep one in my car for emergencies. Days I don't get to read I feel crazy, I need to read every day! Love this discussion!

I try and read every chance I get. Before school, after school, before I go to bed, any spare time on weekends, etc. etc, you know. It's kind of frustrating sometimes, because it can take me a long time to read a book, only because I can't get the time in, but I love reading, so it's totally worth it to me :)
Great post!

I don't know how moms do it either! My life is so hectic without kiddos and I seriously can't image how they do it. I always read for an hour or so before bed. And I don't have cable so the only tv I watch is netflix or DVDs - which gives me plenty of free time in the evenings and on weekends for reading - at least when I'm not working, working on my house, or maintaining personal relationships. Definitely making reading part of my bedtime routine is how I get my page numbers up. My question is "how does everyone keep up with all the blogs?!"

Casey (The Bookish Type) said...

It's so hard to balance! It seems like when I blog a lot, I get behind on reading, and vice versa! I had a lot of trouble last semester because I had no free time at all, but this semester I take advantage of my free Fridays and read as much as I can! I also read pretty much every day and night when I'm home for break to try to make up for the time I lose at school ;)
