Halloween Tour: Movie Casting Random Magic by Sasha Soren

Random Magic Halloween Tour: Casting Random Magic

In several reviews, readers have commented that they’d like to see a Random Magic movie, with Book Junkie commenting that she’d already started casting the characters while she was reading the book -- hence this feature.

Book Trailer: Random Magic

This Halloween, we celebrate all things spooky – including the eerie and unusual characters who populate the pages of Random Magic. Here, we offer some picks for the best actors and actresses to bring the world of Random Magic to life. Here are La Femme Readers’ picks – which are yours?

Winnie (book quote):
“A girl. Rather an interesting girl, with big green eyes and dark hair in messy pigtails spilling over her shoulders. Her dusty patchwork tunic was torn, her face smeared black with dirt and ash, and her left eye puffy, as if she’d walked into a door. She was saying something. Or, might have been, if she didn’t have a huge red gag over her mouth. Hard to tell, really.”

Eleni’s Pick: Zooey Deschanel

Why?: I always pictured Winnie being a girl with many layers with an innocent looking face. On top of that, the light eyes and dark haired ponytails reminded me of Zooey.

-------------------

Callie (book quote): “Callie lolled in the bathtub like a rag doll, fast asleep. Her gold-woven drape was a sodden mess, she’d lost a jeweled sandal and her hair streamed limply over the porcelain, like dark red seaweed. But she’d managed to hang on to her sombrero.”

Eleni’s Pick: Hayden Panettiere

Why?: Callie, even though she comes across as a sloppy mess in the quote, embodies beauty. Her golden locks and jeweled sandals remind me of Hayden's gorgeous style. Especially when she starred in 'Heroes' as a pretty cheerleader that got down and dirty when it came to using her powers of never getting hurt.

-------------------

Professor Random:
The lovable and ingenious but preposterously absent-minded academic, who loses Alice in Wonderland and starts all the hubbub, in the first place.

Professor Random (book quote):
“In a cobwebbery corner of the room was a man who looked a bit like Einstein, only with less fashion sense. He’d forgotten what he was doing there.”

Eleni’s Pick: Christopher Lloyd

Why?: I automatically thought of Christopher Lloyd for the role of Professor Random. His mad scientist look and bad fashion sense are present in the photo above. And of course, who doesn't like 'Back to the Future'?

-------------------

Professor Literati:
The sleek, spooky and mysterious figure with strange ways, who appears to live several lives.

Professor Literati (book quote):
“Smoke curled around Madame Literati’s eyes, which lit thoughtfully as she stared at Winsley over her dark glasses.”

Eleni’s Pick: Helena Bonham Carter

Why? Helena does a great job acting like a spooky and mysterious figure. Madame Literati would come alive if she was casted as her. If you've seen her in movies such as Sweeney Todd and Alice in Wonderland, you'd agree.

-------------------

The Count and Countess De Morgue:
The darkly romantic, soft-spoken and elegant but lethal pair who live for love -- and…having guests for dinner…

Count De Morgue (book quote):
“The count smiled, his heavy-lidded hazel eyes gleaming with the prospect of unexpected diversion…Fresh blood was exactly what they required...”

Eleni’s Pick: Johnny Depp

Why?: Johnny Depp is not only handsome and mischievous looking but, also a fantastic actor. Just like Helena, his creepy deliverance is spot on. In my opinion, he'd play a sexy count who sought out fresh blood.

Countess De Morgue (book quote):
“Like a set of matching funereal angels, Lady De Morgue was as beautiful to look at as the count, and doubly gloomy.”

Eleni’s Pick: Kate Beckinsale

Why?: Kate's passed movie roles of playing a vampire were amazing. She has the beauty and hardness that comes with being a countess. Plus, the visual coupling of Kate and Johnny Depp would be electrifying.

-------------------

The Red Queen:
Whew. Scary.

The Red Queen (book quote):
“Her dark red hair snaked into a twisted coil of interwoven links, and cut through the air like a pair of horns. The snowflakes falling gently onto her hair sizzled as they landed.”

Eleni’s Pick: Rose Mcgowan

Why? Red hair. Bitchy attitude. Need I say more?

If you’ve already read the book – do you agree with these picks? Or do you have some of your own? Feel free to leave a comment giving your dream team! Happy Halloween!

I think I'd see this movie just for all the awesome actors in it. Does anyone think the cover of the book doesn't really do it justice?

Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter and Christopher Lloyd are among my favorites - any movie they'd be in, I'd check out! And about the cover - I think the publishers could have found something much better. I liked the trailer!
