Summary: Some vampires are good. Some are evil. Some are faking it to get girls. Awkward and allergic to the sun, sixteen-year-old Finbar Frame never gets the girl. But when he notices that all the female students at his school are obsessed with a vampire romance novel called Bloodthirsty, Finbar decides to boldly go where no sane guy has gone before-he becomes a vampire, minus the whole blood sucking part. With his brooding nature and weirdly pale skin, it's surprisingly easy for Finbar to pretend to be paranormal. But, when he meets the one girl who just might like him for who he really is, he discovers that his life as a pseudo-vampire is more complicated than he expected. This hilarious debut novel is for anyone who believes that sometimes even nice guys-without sharp teeth or sparkly skin-- can get the girl.

My Review: Bloodthirsty was a laugh out loud novel that brought an innovative approach to the crazed vampire phenomenon. Flynn's creativity behind establishing a character that faked being a vampire was brilliant. Finbar, a quirky yet lovable individual entertained me from beginning to end. The fact that he was different from other strong, male protagonists was actually a relief. His dorky behavior was endearing and relatable. I mean aren't we all geeks at heart? My favorite scene in the book was when Finbar was weirdly looked at by girls on the train who were reading vampire novels. It reminded me when I was obsessed with Twilight, I'd walk around thinking maybe I could find a vampire. I knew it was obviously make believe but I enjoyed my imaginary thoughts.

Finbar went from being a dork to a mysterious vamp that drove all the girls crazy. His pale skin and allergic reaction to the sun played in his favor. However, a lie can sometimes bite you in the butt and in some instances it did. Now, the other characters introduced were amusing, especially the girls who swore Finbar was a supernatural creature. My favorite person besides the protagonist, was Kate. She brought a sense of normalcy and true friendship in his life. The characterization of all the people brought a well balanced plot. I loved the sense of humor behind Finbar's narration and the fun concept. It also left the reader with a unexpected message that could connect to readers. Overall, If you're tired of the mysterious, typical vampires, you should definitely pick up Bloodthirsty. Sometimes a dorky, non-vampire could win your heart over.

My Rating:
Author's Info:
Flynn Meaney lives in Mamaroneck, New York. She is an alumna of the University of Notre Dame and is currently a poetry student in the Hunter College MFA Creative Writing program. Bloodthirsty emerged out of Flynn's broad love of pop culture vampires and her friend Lucila's comment: "Now that vampires are so hot, we can stop tanning." Lucila's observation made Flynn think about how the paranormal craze would benefit the pale and thin teens who would have suffered during the Baywatch years. Flynn is currently working on her second novel, coming Fall 2011.

I was so close to buying this last weekend, but then I put it back after I was like, I don't even know what it's about, maybe not worth the money. But, your review convinced me, it's something I would love.

I'm glad you liked this, I wasn't sure if it was just going to be uber lame. I will certainly have to check this out now. I like this cover way better than the other one too.

I'm really in the mood to read a book like this right now. Halloweeny but not scary or too creepy. I'll have to pick up a copy--Thanks for the review!

I’d heard of Bloodthirsty and thought it had potential to be cute, but I forgot about it until I read your review! Sounds like it wasn’t anything stellar, unfortunately. The premise still makes me giggle, though.

Now I’m really curious about “that bit near the end”…
