Summary: Nastasya has spent the last century living as a spoiled, drugged-out party girl. She feels nothing and cares for no one. But when she witnesses her best friend, a Dark Immortal, torture a human, she realizes something's got to change. She seeks refuge at a rehab for wayward immortals, where she meets the gorgeous, undeniably sexy Reyn, who seems inexplicably linked to her past. Nastasya finally begins to deal with life, and even feels safe--until the night she learns that someone wants her dead. Cate Tiernan, author of the popular Sweep series, returns with an engaging story of a timeless struggle and inescapable romance, the first book in a stunning new fantasy trilogy.

Guest Post:

1) How did you come up with the concept of The Immortals?

CT:
Well, certainly the idea of immortals is not a new one--there have been many other books and movies about them. Vampires are a type of immortals too, of course. I didn’t want to write about vampires--other people have done that already, brilliantly--but I knew I wanted to write about supernatural beings. Mostly I wanted to write the story of people whose lives have intersected over and over again for hundreds of years, but can only get together when it’s really right for them to.

2) How do immortals surpass all the supernatural stereotypes out now?

CT: I don’t know that they do! I don’t think of one supernatural type as being better than any other type. Werewolves, angels, vampires, witches--each one has its own charms and fascinating qualities. For me it’s more about the individual characters’ stories--who they are as people, before you even take their supernaturalness--supernaturality?--into account.

3) Throughout the novel which character creation remained your favorite?

CT: I love Nastasya, of course. I love her flaws, her vulnerabilities, her anger, her obnoxiousness . . . so I’m having a lot of fun with her. But I like all of the characters, and find them all interesting. I know so much more about them than what shows up on the page, and I find them fascinating and compelling to write about. And Reyn is a hot, hot Viking hunk.

4) What can we expect from the rest of the series?

CT: Oh, dark things. Then fabulous things. Heartbreak. True love. Joy. Healing. Ickiness. Impatience. Resolve. Really horrible fights with evil things. The usual. I hope you enjoy it!
