Summary: Ashlyn Woods just transferred to one of the most beautiful campuses on the west coast, where she can't wait to start her life over as a normal college student. But her plans take an unexpected turn when she discovers that she is a Soterian: a person who develops amazing powers when the balance of good and evil shifts too far in evil's favor. Soon she and the other Soterians are studying martial arts and learning to use their powers to prevent California from being plunged into chaos. But they quickly discover that they're up against a much more dangerous enemy than they anticipated. And when Ashlyn meets Kai, a devastatingly gorgeous guitar player, she realizes she must sacrifice more than she ever imagined.

My Review: Rising Shadow was an action packed, fun and creative novel. I would consider it to be in the Young Adult genre, but the writing also has a mature adult like feel to it. From the beginning, Jacquelyn does a great job introducing her characters. I quickly got to know each one of them and actually started caring about them. The first individual I got to know is Ashlyn, she came across as an athletic and strong willed person. I admired her determination and envied her fearless personality. I also enjoyed the other characters, especially Kai. He was such a stud muffin, not only hot but sweet as well. You know a man like that doesn't come around too often so I was immediately intrigued. Once Ashlyn and the other Soterians were discovered, the book got very interesting. I really loved the modern day twist on all the "superheroes" and their powers. The detailed writing was nice but sometimes a little too wordy for my taste. I would sometimes put the novel down and come back to it when I was in the mood. Also, they're a lot of things that are left out which I'm guessing Jacquelyn is saving for her next four books in the series. I've noticed on Jacquelyn's site that she gives her readers the chance to download the first book, which is so awesome of her! Here is a link if you'd be interested: http://www.soterians.com But, I do recommend you go and buy it since the cover looks cool and all ;)

My Rating: 4.4 out of 5
