Book Review: Candor by Pam Bachorz

Candor by Pam Bachorz
Genre: Young Adult Fiction
Release Date: September 22, 2009
Publisher: Egmont USA
Pages: 249
Pre-order: Amazon.com

Summary: Stepford makes the perfect wife, but Candor teens are changed for life. Welcome to the town of Candor, Florida, where everything is perfect- too perfect. Teens respect their elders, do their chores, and enjoy homework...all because they're controlled by subliminal messages. But there's one holdout: Oscar, the son of the town's founder, who's mastered the art of combating the Messages and getting kids out. For a fee. Oscar is the model Candor teen, and secret saboteur, until Nia moves to the town, and a smitten Oscar can't stand to see her changed. Now Oscar must choose- get Nia out of Candor and lose her forever, or keep her with him, and risk exposing his scheme...and his life. Candor takes the classical sci-fi themes of comformity and mind control and turns them on their head.
My Review: Candor is a town full of perfect cookie cutter residents; they are brainwashed by hidden messages played in music all over the town. Most of the time, families came to Candor to fix their rebellious teen, if we had that today, we wouldn't need boot camp haha. I love the storyline and I could not put the book down. I love the characters, especially Oscar, I love a bad boy that goes against the rules. I enjoyed the romance between Nia and Oscar, even though their relationship went against the town's relationship laws. I had a feeling it was going to end the way it did, but I still loved it and admired Oscar's choice. I recommend this book since it was so damn good! I hope Pam writes a sequel and this book would make an awesome movie, I hope someone approaches Pam about the idea sooner or later.
My Rating: 4.8 out of 5

Thanks for the great review! I am glad you loved Oscar 'cause I love him too. :) I had to laugh that you mentioned boot camp-- watch the video from Sarge Watkins on http://www.candorfl.com/videos/ (scroll to the bottom).

This either reminds me of a movie or a book or both. There was a movie that came on lifetime some years ago called, Perfect Little Angels, I think. Reading this sort of reminded me of that. Oh, now I remember the book. The Big Empty Series by J.B. Stephens. It's one of my favorites.
