Beautiful Book Hangover will be posted sporadically on La Femme Readers. According to the Urban Dictionary, "a book hangover is a headache you get after staying up into the wee hours of the morning staring at teeny tiny print." As book addicts we've all experienced this type of hangover many times, so why not share them with each other? You are more than welcome to use this idea, just as long as you credit me.

Wither (The Chemical Garden, #1) by Lauren DeStefano

Release Date: March 22, 2011
Publisher: Simon & Schuster Children's Publishing

Summary: By age sixteen, Rhine Ellery has four years left to live. She can thank modern science for this genetic time bomb. A botched effort to create a perfect race has left all males with a lifespan of 25 years, and females with a lifespan of 20 years. Geneticists are seeking a miracle antidote to restore the human race, desperate orphans crowd the population, crime and poverty have skyrocketed, and young girls are being kidnapped and sold as polygamous brides to bear more children. When Rhine is kidnapped and sold as a bride, she vows to do all she can to escape. Her husband, Linden, is hopelessly in love with her, and Rhine can’t bring herself to hate him as much as she’d like to. He opens her to a magical world of wealth and illusion she never thought existed, and it almost makes it possible to ignore the clock ticking away her short life. But Rhine quickly learns that not everything in her new husband’s strange world is what it seems. Her father-in-law, an eccentric doctor bent on finding the antidote, is hoarding corpses in the basement. Her fellow sister wives are to be trusted one day and feared the next, and Rhine is desperate to communicate to her twin brother that she is safe and alive. Will Rhine be able to escape--before her time runs out?
Why it kept me up: The book hangover I felt at work the next day was definitely worth it. Honestly, this book so far has been my favorite debut of 2011. Its intensity and originality holds all the qualities I look for in a novel. The plot took place in the future, while the tone contributed a historical vibe. This aspect would grab any historical and non-historical reader. I really hope they make Wither into a movie, it would be simply amazing to see it on the big screen! Lauren, you are a gem in this YA world of authors. I can't wait to read the follow-up! If you missed my review, go here.

I want to read this one! Thanks for post!
I actually just ordered this book! I keep seeing wonderful reviews everywhere and that made me have to have it!!!
I stayed awake really late reading Anna and the French Kiss this week. I couldn't get enough! I haven't read anything since. I think my next book has to be a really good one after ANNA! :)
I'm going to get my hands on this one soon! And I'm really excited because it sounds amazing. I'm glad you thought it was too. :D
I agree- this book kept me up late as well. It's impossible to put down!
Wither is definitely a book to stay up for :)I stayed up until 5am last night reading an ARC of Red Glove! All I have say is WOW!
this happens to me ALL the time.
this week i had book hangover from The Vespertine AND from Blink & Caution (by Tim Wynne-Jones).
I loved this book as well. I finished around 2pm on a Friday so I didn't necessarily have a book hangover but I did have "book mourning" - when anything you pick up after reading a fantastic book is marred.
