Fall Into Fantasy Interview: Andrea Cremer (Nightshade)

Today is my Fall Into Fantasy event stop, hosted by the amazing Casey from The Bookish Type. Thank you to Casey for including me in this event and I appreciate Andrea taking the time out answer my questions! Now, who has read Nightshade? Hm, I'm sure a lot of hands went up. I've heard raving reviews which I hope will carry over once I read it for my second stop next month. The book is now available in bookstores so run out and support Andrea by putting her on the bestseller list! Oh and commenting on this post would be awesome too. :)

Andrea Cremer spent her childhood daydreaming while roaming the forests and lakeshores of Northern Wisconsin. She now lives in Minnesota, but she thinks of her homeland as the “Canadian Shield” rather than the Midwest. Andrea has always loved writing and has never stopped writing, but she only recently plunged into the deep end of the pool that is professional writing. When she’s not writing, Andrea teaches history at a very nice liberal arts college in St. Paul. In the little spare time she can find, Andrea stares up at trees, rescues infant rabbits from predatory cats, and invents names for pug puppies with her husband. She has an unfortunate tendency to spill things – white carpets beware! Nightshade is her debut novel.

Author Interview:

1) When did you first consider yourself a writer?

AC: I've always been a writer because there was never I point in my life (excepting toddlerhood) when I didn't love writing. But I didn't think I could be a professional writer because it was almost too big a dream to pursue. It was something I wanted too much - and I came to it by accident. A horse broke my foot in 2008 and I couldn't walk for eight weeks. So I decided I'd better finally try writing a novel and the rest is history!

2) What inspired you to write Nightshade?

AC: I write from characters and Calla just got stuck in my head in November 2008. I couldn't stop thinking about a girl who I knew was also a wolf. The story around her personal struggle spiraled out from that point. I tied her life to my fascination with witchcraft and warfare in human history and Nightshade's world was born.

3) If you had to do it all over again, would you change anything in Nightshade?

AC: Absolutely not I love NIGHTSHADE and it's just as it should be. I can't wait for the world to meet Calla and her pack!

4) If you had to describe your book in one word, what would it be?

AC: Seductive

5) How does it feel being a debut author?

AC: Unbelievable. I still pinch myself every day, knowing how rare an opportunity I've been granted. I am so grateful.

6) What can we expect from this YA fantasy series?

AC: Lots of mystery, romance, and nail biting suspense. Knock you out of your chair action. Evil cliff-hanger endings. Kick-ass heroines and swoon-worthy guys. Yep that pretty much covers it!

7) What do you like to do when you're not writing?

AC: Reading! I also love to take long walks with my dogs, practice yoga, and listen to music. I love music; all my books have extensive playlists.

8) What book are you currently reading?

AC: I'm reading Marcelo in the Real World by Francisco X. Stork. It's wonderful.

9) Do you have anything to say to all your future readers?

AC: Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!

10) What's the most craziest thing you've ever done that you wouldn't dare share with others (besides us?)

AC: When I was in sixth grade a "friend" told me she was going to tell my crush that I liked him. He had a girlfriend and I was horrified, but I didn't want anyone else to blab my evil secret, so I ran over to him at a school dance and just blurted out: "Hey I like you, I know you have a girlfriend and I'm sorry to tell you this." I'm sure I was the color of a tomato and he pretty much just looked stunned. And nothing else happened, except that I think his girlfriend hated me until she moved away a year later (thank goodness). The "friend" probably wouldn't have actually told him, but I was pretty gullible then. Okay. I still am.

Great interview! I think you can always tell when an author writes for the characters - it really makes them come alive and draws you into the world. Pretty much all my favorite authors say this is how they write, so I think there must be something to it =) I think Andrea's summary of Nightshade pretty much hits the nail on the head! Especially the evil cliffhangers! Hmph. Lol =)

Nightshade introduces us to a new fantasy world that was completely original and engaging. Aspects reminded me of the world in Vampire Academy. Not anything specific, maybe just the overall vibe. Nightshade isn't about werewolves, not really. They really aren't werewolves, they are Guardians. They can turn into wolves anytime they want. They are sworn to protect the Keepers and must abide by their rules, but are given every comfort in life.
There are layers and layers of world building, it just isn't obvious. A lot of things don't really get explained until at least 100 pages into the book. The history is complex and I can't wait to learn more about it in the second book.
